Aphasia Uncovered - Wakefield
Learn about what Aphasia is and how you should adapt your communication style based on the needs of the person you are communicating with. This session will be delivered by speech and language therapist, Catherine Hayes and supported by a person with aphasia.
It is thought that 85% of the UK population do not know what aphasia is and yet we estimate there to be 1,740 people living with aphasia in Wakefield after a stroke. This free training session seeks to push back against that and help people to truly understand the condition and consider how to adapt their communication style when talking with a person with aphasia. This training session is aimed at staff and volunteers from other charities or organisations who may support people with aphasia in their role in Wakefield. It is part of a West Yorkshire wide series of training sessions being delivered in 2026-2027 by Aphasia Support and is funded by the British Aphasiology Society.
This training session will help you to:
- Understand what aphasia is and how it affects people in a range of different ways.
- Use a total communication approach when communicating with a person with aphasia
- Understand some of the techniques and digital tools you can use to support your communcation with a person with aphasia
- Understand the support landscape for people with aphasia and their carers in Wakefield.
